Embarking on our recovery journey can often feel overwhelming, as we wrestle with persistent negative behaviors that appear unchangeable. But there is hope! Embracing the principles found in Celebrate Recovery, especially Principle 3 “consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ's care and control” will initiate meaningful changes. This principle encourages us to take bold steps away from our past patterns and to trust in God’s guidance for healing and growth.

How do we get past the barriers of pride, fear, guilt, worry, and doubt? How will taking action in our recovery empower us to break free from negativity and deepen our understanding of discipleship. Lets uncover the transformative power of making conscious choices!

C.R. Lesson 6 Acrostic: ACTION

  1. Accept Jesus Christ as your Higher Power and Savior!

Make the decision to ask Jesus into your heart. Now is the time to commit your life, to establish that personal relationship He so desires.

    Read: Romans 10:9

  2. Commit to seek and follow HIS will!

We need to change our definition of willpower: Willpower is the willingness to accept God's power. We see that there is no room for God if we are full of ourselves.

    Read: Psalm 143:9-10

  3. Turn it over

"Let go; let God!" Turn over all the big things and the little things in your life to your Higher Power. Jesus Christ wants a relationship with ALL of you. What burdens are you carrying that you want to TURN OVER to God?

    Read: Matthew 11:28-30

  4. It's only the beginning

In the third principle we make only the initial decision, the commitment to seek and follow God's will. Our walk with our Higher Power, Jesus Christ, begins with this decision and is followed by a lifelong process of growing as a Christian.

    Read: Philippians 1:6

  5. One day at a time

Recovery happens one day at a time. If we remain stuck in the yesterday or constantly worry about tomorrow, we will waste the precious time of the present. We can only change our hurts, hang-ups, and habits in the present.

    Read: Matthew 6:34

  6. Next: How do I ask Christ into my life?

Ask yourself the following four questions(below), and if you earnestly answer yes to them all, pray the prayer that follows. That's all you have to do!

How to Establish a "Spiritual Base" for My Life

    By Pastor Rick Warren

    Do I...

Believe Jesus Christ died on the cross for me and showed He was God by coming back to life? Read 1 Corinthians 15:2-4

    Do I...

Accept God's free forgiveness for my sins? Read Romans 3:22

    Do I...

Switch to God's plan for my life? Read Mark 1:16-18 and Romans 12:2

    Do I...

Express my desire to Christ to be the director of my life? Read Romans 10:9

Dear God, I believe You sent Your Son, Jesus, to die for my sins so I can be forgiven. I'm sorry for my sins and I want to live the rest of my life the way You want me to. Please put Your Spirit in my life to direct me. Amen.

Understanding the Importance of Commitment

Committing your life and will to Christ’s care and control goes beyond mere words; it is a life-changing commitment that sparks transformation. This commitment involves allowing Christ to direct our actions, thoughts, and decisions. Making such a commitment often requires us to step outside our comfort zones. Having the courage to participate in Celebrate Recovery, sharing our struggles publicly, revealing our vulnerabilities so we can receive help, is a significant step toward recovery.

Surrendering to His will opens the door to a path filled with growth and renewal. By recognizing our need for help and leaning on Christ’s strength, we empower ourselves while acknowledging our limitations. This act of surrender becomes core to our recovery journey. Committing to a higher purpose will significantly increase our ability to overcome our struggles while allowing Christ's miracles to enter our lives.

The Role of Discipleship in Recovery

Discipleship is crucial in our spiritual growth and plays an essential role in recovery. A strong support system can be transformative. Connecting with others who share similar challenges through structured groups or mentoring relationships promotes an environment ripe for healing. Discipleship nurtures accountability and support, both vital for overcoming struggles. When we invest in these relationships, we receive insights from those who have successfully navigated similar challenges. This process equips us with necessary tools that are instrumental in our healing journey.

Taking Action: Practical Steps to Commit

Understanding the principles is just the first part; it is equally important to turn that understanding into practice. Here are some actionable steps:

  1. Self-Reflection: Take time for prayer and reflection. Assess areas of your life where you have taken control but need surrender. For instance, if you recognize that an unhealthy habit is holding you back, write it down and explore its impact.

  2. Set Goals: Create clear, achievable goals reflecting your desire for change. Write these down and review them regularly to track your progress. Identify strategies to support your goals.

  3. Engage in Community: Seek supportive groups like Celebrate Recovery. Joining a community not only provides encouragement but also fosters fellowship, where collective experiences can be shared.

  4. Daily Devotion: Dedicate time each day to read Scripture and pray. When we engage daily in spiritual practices, we begin to find peace and clarity.

  5. Accountability Partner: Find a companion for your journey. By sharing struggles and victories, you can lighten your burdens and encourage bold steps forward, which can lead to improvements in overall well-being.

These practical steps are essential in translating your commitment into behaviors aligned with Christ’s teachings, paving the way for a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Celebrating Progress, Not Perfection

Throughout the recovery process, it is essential to celebrate every small victory. Progress may seem slow, but each step matters. Recovery is more than just a destination; it is a journey. Recognize the changes you are making, no matter how small they seem. This practice of gratitude will shift your focus from what isn’t working to what is.

Try keeping a gratitude journal to help you acknowledge three positive outcomes each day, strengthening your resolve and keeping your spirits high as you continue moving forward.

Deepening Our Relationship with Christ

The more we commit our lives to Christ, the more profound our relationship becomes. This transformation is gradual and involves learning to trust and obey Him. By continually seeking His wisdom, we learn to hear His voice in our lives. Regularly attending worship services, reading Scripture, and participating in community gatherings not only fortifies our bond but helps assimilate His principles into our everyday lives.

Reflecting on Bold Action in Recovery

Taking bold action in our recovery journey is essential for breaking free from negativity and living a meaningful life. By committing our lives to Christ, we begin a transformative path that impacts not only ourselves but those around us.

It is important to remember that transformation does not mean striving for perfection. Instead, embrace the journey, be open to growth, and move forward with purpose. Aligning our actions with Christ’s will makes transformation not only possible but inevitable.

Let’s take action today, choosing to step boldly into hope, growth, and deep transformation under the guidance of Christ!
